Our
Ph.D. program is typically a 4-5 year program. Below is a set of rough
guidelines that will give you a sense of the plan of study in our program. Of
course, each student's progress is different and depends on their own goals
and work habits.
First Year
·
Course Work:
- PSY 680A and B -
Industrial and Organizational Survey Courses
- PSY 681A and B -
Experimental Design and Method Sequence
- PSY 600, 601, or STAT 512,
514 - Graduate Statistics Sequence
- Research:
- Work on research project
with major professor
- Begin work on Masters
(select major professor, committee members, and general area of
interest for master's research)
Second Year
- Course Work:
- Take additional
substantive and quantitative coursework (see the Courses that we offer)
- Research:
- Continue working on
research projects with major professor
- Continue work on Masters
(write and defend thesis proposal, collect and analyze data)
Third Year
- Course Work:
- Take additional
substantive and quantitative coursework as needed or desired
- Research:
- Complete Masters Thesis
(oral defense)
- Continue working on
additional research projects
- Take preliminary exams at
the completion of the third year (preparation for these exams usually
takes place in the Spring of your third year)
Fourth and Fifth Year
- Course Work:
- Students will occasionally
take additional classes during these years, but typically very few
- Research:
- Dissertation Work
- Complete additional
projects
- Internships:
- Students who wish to
complete an internship typically do so sometime during their final 2
years. Internships range in length from 3-12 months.
- Job search in Fall of the
fifth year
